Clearing gutters before bushfire season
Of everything on a home maintenance list, clearing the gutters is the job with the widest gap between how small it is and how much it matters. Dry leaf litter sitting in a gutter is fuel, positioned at roof height, directly against the building.
Embers, not flame fronts
Most homes lost in bushfires are not taken by a wall of flame arriving at the front door. They are taken by embers carried ahead of the fire, landing in the places where fine dry fuel has collected. Gutters full of leaf litter are the most reliable of those places on any house.
When to do it
Before the season, not during it. Late winter into early spring is the sensible window on this corridor, which gives you a clear roof going into the hottest months. If you are under heavy eucalypt cover, one clear will not hold and you should plan on a second.
Do not forget the valleys and the downpipes
Gutter runs get the attention, but roof valleys collect more debris than gutters do and are easier to miss from the ground. Blocked downpipes are the other half of it, because a gutter that cannot drain stays wet, then dries out full.
